South Station, in Boston, MA, experiences an average of 60,000 commuters, 10,000 Amtrakers and an untold number of diners every week day. These photos, as an extension of Brian Tucker Bresnahan’s public art project “Heads Up!” are meant to inspire a heads up attitude in which “strangers” are made comfortable with looking directly into each other’s eyes, becoming familiar with one another and to, hopefully, develop a more intimate connection with the wider community. The photos are meant not to be glossy, to conceal certain elements of each subject’s face or to present a likeness other than one’s own true identity (without special effects, cosmetic rendering, etc). In so doing, this project hopes to shift mainstream ideology away from some of the more shallow expectations of commercial culture, especially in regard to how people “should” look and feel, toward a more honest and meaningful understanding of who we are as a whole. This will, in effect, improve one’s self-confidence (since one will longer hold him/herself accountable to a false pretense of appearance) while freeing one’s energy toward healthier pursuits of body, mind and soul.
Brian Tucker Bresnahan was born and raised in Brattleboro, Vermont, attended high school at Northfield Mount Hermon (Northfield, MA), studied Civil Engineering and Ethnological Anthropology at Union College (Schenectady, NY) and conducted independent studies while on host stays in Barbados, Japan and China. After graduation, he located to Portland, Oregon, to create Wilderness Adventure Documentaries and to enroll in Independent Film Making studies at the Northwest Film Institute, as well as Graphic Design and Multimedia Programs at Portland Community College. Bresnahan transitioned to Independent Contracting in the Commercial Film Industry as a Set Grip and Electrician for National Television Advertisements and Feature Films. Looking to enrich his photography and cinematography skills, Bresnahan then moved to Santa Barbara, CA, and enrolled in the Commercial Photography and Masters of Science Programs at the renowned Brooks Institute of Photography. In 2005, Bresnahan relocated to the East Coast, where he has lived and contributed ever since. In addition to pursuing his commercial photography career, Bresnahan has expanded into public art projects, contemporary lighting designs and kinetic fine art installations. Bresnahan now provides professional photography services to a wide variety of educational, corporate and private clientele, as well as exhibiting his personal work in public venues, galleries, restaurants and salons. Examples of his work can currently be seen at the Boston Children’s Museum, and an upcoming Adam Sandler movie (“Grown Ups”).
