South Station, in Boston, MA, experiences an average of 60,000 commuters, 10,000 Amtrakers and an untold number of diners every week day.  These photos, as an extension of Brian Tucker Bresnahan’s public art project “Heads Up!” are meant to inspire a heads up attitude in which “strangers” are made comfortable with looking directly into each other’s eyes, becoming familiar with one another and to, hopefully, develop a more intimate connection with the wider community.  The photos are meant not to be glossy, to conceal certain elements of each subject’s face or to present a likeness other than one’s own true identity (without special effects, cosmetic rendering, etc).  In so doing, this project hopes to shift mainstream ideology away from some of the more shallow expectations of commercial culture, especially in regard to how people “should” look and feel, toward a more honest and meaningful understanding of who we are as a whole.  This will, in effect, improve one’s self-confidence (since one will longer hold him/herself accountable to a false pretense of appearance) while freeing one’s energy toward healthier pursuits of body, mind and soul.
